Last weekend, I had a fascinating exchange with ChatGPT-01 Mini, the latest version of ChatGPT, and it really got me thinking about the future of consulting.
I wanted to update my business messaging so I turned to ChatGPT for inspiration. I created a prompt using the RACE framework and asked for an opinion. What started as a simple back-and-forth quickly turned into a 45-minute deep dive. I shared my concerns, detailed my audience’s pain points, and explained the limitations of my current messaging. I kept asking for feedback, samples, and opinions, challenging the AI to understand exactly what I needed.
What I got back was very impressive. I don’t think I could’ve got a similar final output on my own. But then I wondered: if I can refine my messaging through an exchange with AI, what’s stopping my clients from doing the same? Helping clients with their messaging is a big part of what I do, so why would they need me?
But then I also realized that the specific output I got was a result of how I infused my unique experiences and stories into the conversation. My exchange with ChatGPT wasn’t just about structured prompts; it was about leveraging the mental models, knowledge, and nuanced understanding I’ve built up from working with hundreds of clients.
AI is fantastic at brainstorming and generating ideas and incredible speed, but it can’t tap into your personal and professional experiences – or the stories that shape your expertise. Unless Elon’s Neuralink finds a way to extract and upload the info in our brains into the public domain, or someone invents Dumbledore’s Pensieve, we’re safe for now 😂 😂
But seriously, I see many consultants and advisors on LinkedIn feeling overwhelmed or frustrated with the limitations of AI. I even sense a bit of resentment.
My take?
Keep an open mind and keep experimenting. Gen AI is only going to get better, and when you use it to supplement your human experience, you’ll be doing your clients a huge favour. Your output will be far better than what you could achieve on your own.
