Two types of consulting founders. One of them unknowingly kills growth.
Over the last two decades in consulting, I have worked with and observed many different kinds of consulting founders. Different industries, different business models, different geographies. Yet despite the surface differences, I keep seeing the same pattern emerge.
Two founders can start from almost the same place. They have strong expertise, solid networks, and a reputation for delivering excellent work. In the early years, referrals come in steadily and the firm grows without too much strain. Momentum feels natural.
Then, at some point, that momentum slows. 🛑
What happens next quietly determines the trajectory of the firm.
One founder responds by trying to professionalize growth quickly. They hire a salesperson or fractional head of sales. They engage a lead generation agency.
They bring in marketing support. They start layering in new tools and, more recently, AI platforms that promise leverage.
The intention is reasonable. Growth needs structure, so structure is added. 🏗️
From the outside, the firm looks more sophisticated. There are more meetings, more dashboards, more pipeline reviews. Activity increases.
Yet revenue does not move in proportion to the effort. The business feels busy, but not stronger.
Frustration begins to creep in. The hire is questioned. The leads are blamed. The messaging is revisited. Another tactic is tested. 🧪
I have watched this cycle repeat enough times to know that it is rarely about the individual hire or the tool itself. Something more fundamental is happening beneath the surface, and until that is addressed, adding more around the problem only compounds it.
There is another type of founder who approaches this stage very differently.
The difference is not dramatic or loud, but it is decisive. Over time, it creates very different outcomes.
I have laid out the full pattern in the carousel below. If your firm feels active yet not structurally advancing, it may be worth examining which path you are currently on. Read, save, and share if you find it useful👇
