A few years ago, my former boss who had built a $10M consulting firm told me something I’ll never forget.
I was asking him questions about growth, pipeline, hiring, and scaling.
At one point he paused and said something that completely changed how I think about consulting businesses.
“If you want to build a business, focus on the balance sheet, not the P&L.”
That line stayed with me.
At the time, I realized I had been thinking about my consulting business the wrong way.
Like most consultants, I was focused on the P&L.
Project → deliver → get paid → repeat.
Busy. Productive. But fragile.
What he meant was this:
The consultants who grow are not just generating revenue.
They are building assets that grow in value.
Building an asset requires:
• A clear market position
• A repeatable offer
• A sales cadence
• Thought leadership
• A team that can deliver without them
These things compound.
Now that I spend my time helping consulting firms grow, I see the same pattern again and again.
The consultants who grow tend to exhibit the behaviors on the right side of this infographic.
The ones spinning their wheels tend to look like the left side.
And there’s one more lesson I’ve learned along the way.
It may sound cliché, but the difference between the left side and the right side often comes down to one thing:
Courage.
Courage to:
• hire before you feel ready
• invest in systems
• delegate delivery
• show up daily to build pipeline
Moving from delivery-focused consultant to business owner requires it.
That’s where most people get stuck.
Make sure you don’t.
