The Real Risk Is Not Losing the Deal. It Is Winning the Wrong One.

Many consultants say their win rates are high once they get a prospect meeting.
But they often overlook a bigger problem.

Most experienced consultants are comfortable in discovery conversations. Many report conversion rates between 50 and 80 percent, and in most cases, that is accurate.

The issue is not the ability to hold a conversation. It is how that conversation is being used. ⚠️

Because discovery feels familiar, many consultants rely on experience and intuition to guide the discussion. The conversation flows, the prospect explains the issue, and a scope begins to form quickly.

That comfort can create blind spots. 🦯

Are you uncovering the prospect’s core issue, or simply accepting the first version of the problem they present? Are you exploring what sits behind the stated challenge? Are you fully understanding how this issue affects the organization and the individuals involved?

Winning a deal can feel straightforward. Determining whether it is the right deal is more difficult.

When discovery is unstructured, the risks tend to surface later. Problems are framed at a surface level. Root causes remain unexplored. Impact is underestimated or poorly articulated. Pricing reflects effort rather than value.

The result is not usually a lost opportunity. More often, it shows up as scope creep, delivery friction, or value left unclaimed.

Strong discovery is not about asking more questions. It is about being deliberate in how the conversation is directed. The questions you ask, and when you ask them, shape how deeply a prospect reflects on their situation and what meaningful change would actually require.

The infographic below shares sample questions you can use to move beyond comfortable conversations and into more rigorous discovery.
