There was one thing I used to get really frustrated with while looking for new consulting deals.
It also made me a bit jealous and insecure.
Everyone told me that consulting is a game played amongst friends.
“Relationships drive sales. Youโve got to be a part of the right ๐ผ๐น๐ฑ ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ or be a friend of a friend to find the best consulting opportunities.”
I knew there was some truth to that. Relationships matter.
So I did my best to work my network and get referrals.
But I could only do this up to a point. Very soon, my referral well became dry.
I felt a lack of control and became nearly desperate. I constantly wondered if I should start looking for a corporate job again.
After months of struggle, it finally dawned on me…
Relationships matter, but you donโt need to be a part of a special old boy network or know the right โpeople.โ
You can reach out to whoever you want, as long as youโre ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด, ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐ป๐ and ๐๐ฎ๐น๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ to the other person BEFORE you seek their attention
All it takes is one or two conversations to start a new relationship. And that’s enough to give you a crack at a deal
Once I learned how to reach out and build relationships the right way, thatโs when business became fun.
